My story and why I love what I do
At my heaviest, I weighed 120kg. I was pre-diabetic, constantly bloated, tired all the time, and battling heartburn daily. Just getting through the day felt hard — and I knew something had to change.
But, “I’ve never been the athletic type.” I didn’t grow up fit or strong. Every time I walked into a commercial gym, I felt out of place — judged, insecure, and like I didn’t belong. So I started training in my garage instead. Just me, some weights, Muay Thai, and loud metal music.
Even then, I didn’t feel supported. The people closest to me — my family — would tell me what I was doing was wrong, was going to hurt me or that it wouldn’t work. But as an only child, I’d already learned how to show up for myself. I ran 11km in the rain, trained late at night or early before work, and just kept showing up. I didn’t care what anyone else thought. I just wanted to be strong, healthy, and proud of myself.
It took a lot of trial and error — and I mean a lot — but eventually, I dropped 50kg.
At my lightest, I thought: maybe I could help others do this too. So I became a qualified personal trainer.
But even after all that… I still wasn’t enough. I felt small and weak. My mates and family kept commenting on how “skinny” I looked, and it only made me feel worse. I had lost the weight, but I still didn’t feel like myself. My body still didn’t match the man I was on the inside.
Around that time, people close to me were struggling too — with diabetes, depression, anxiety, autoimmune issues, even cancer. And it hit me: being a PT wasn’t enough. I wanted to people help on a deeper level. That’s when I studied to become a qualified Naturopath — for those who don’t know, it’s a holistic, evidence-based approach to health that focuses on the whole person: nutrition, movement, recovery, mindset, prevention.
Around the same time, I stumbled into strongman training. And it changed everything.
It wasn’t about abs or aesthetics. It was about picking up heavy stuff, moving with purpose, and feeling confident in your body’s ability to do amazing things. And the community — man, the strongman crew was the most supportive and welcoming group I’d ever been a part of. For the first time, I felt like I truly belonged. My fellow competitors were the one’s cheering loudest for me to succeed.
It wasn’t an easy journey, but now, I’m proud to say I’m a qualified Naturopath and The 7th Strongest Natural (no steroids) man under 80kg in Australia and New Zealand.
